Strike, when 30 railway workers died while protesting work and living
conditions. Just a few days after the strike ended, President Grover Cleveland
signed the holiday into law, and since then Americans have marked the day to
recognize the pivotal role played by the American worker in keeping the country
strong and economically healthy.
