Information About Boston, MA

Christmas Flower Delivery in Boston

Did you know that Christmas was banned in Boston? Well it was! Christmas was banned in the 17th century Puritan era. It was nearly two hundred years before Christmas was deemed fashionable in the city and throughout Massachusetts. Needless to say that Boston Florists were unable to create great Christmas Arrangements for fear of being fined or thrown in jail. Making local floral delivery tough to say the least.

These days, it may not be a midnight ride, but Boston florists will be sure to deliver your flowers all across town.

One of the oldest cities in the United States, Boston was founded in 1630 by Puritan Colonists from England. Both the Boston Tea Party and the Boston Massacre took place in the city during the 18th century American Revolution when the thirteen colonies banded together to break free of British Rule.

The population began to grow in the 1820's with the arrival of European settlers. By the mid 1800's there were 35,000 Irish immigrants living in the city and by 1880, Boston was also home to French Canadians, Russians, and Italians among other nationalities.

Boston Commons was developed in 1640 and was the nation's first public park. The first public library was established in 1653, and perhaps the most significant first for the city was the development of the nation's first subway. 95% of the original system is still used today.

There are several conventions and trade shows in Boston each year helping the city's tourism industry earn an estimated $8 billion annually. The New England Spring Flower Show was the world's longest running floral show and up until 2008, had been a yearly event for 137 years. Boston flower enthusiasts and floriculture industry professionals would head to the Boston flower show in eager anticipation of the upcoming spring season. Boston flower shop owners, event planners and Boston flower farmers would attend in high numbers to view the latest in floral design and growing techniques. Winter weary locals desperate to see flowers in Boston after a dreary cold season also eagerly anticipated the yearly event.

In 2008, the Massachusetts Horticultural Society announced that there would not be a 2009 show and didn't know when or if the event would ever return. The reason for the cancellation was largely due to the financial hardship the Horticultural Society was experiencing. Many blame the trouble on fiscal irresponsibility and mismanagement of funds. In addition to providing education for Boston florists and other industry insiders, the show also provided endless networking opportunities for Boston flower shop owners to mingle with area event planners and growers.

After a year without a show, the Paragon Group has stepped in and now puts on a Boston Flower show in the spring. They've kept the Horticultural Society involved by allowing them to organize a floral competition and design an exhibition garden. The floral design contest features entries from all over New England including top Boston flower designers. Several Boston florists also submit entries, as do amateurs who arrange flowers in their spare time as a hobby. Although not the grand event of years past, Boston flower industry professionals are thankful that there is at least some remnant of one of the city's most loved trade shows.

Your Boston Flower Quotes

Who would have thought it possible that a tiny little flower could preoccupy a person so completely that there simply wasn't room for any other thought....
- Sophie Scholl

If of thy mortal goods thou art bereft,
And of thy meager store
Two loaves alone to thee are left,
Sell one, and with the dole
Buy hyacinths to feed thy soul.
- Sheikh Muslih-uddin Saadi Shirazi

flowers construct the most charming geometries: circles like the sun, ovals, cones, curlicues and a variety of triangular eccentricities,
which when viewed with the eye of a magnifying glass seem a Lilliputian frieze of psychedelic silhouettes.
- Duane Michals

There are philosophies as varied as the flowers of the field,
and some of them weeds and a few of them poisonous weeds.
But they none of them create the psychological conditions
in which I first saw, or desired to see, the flower.
- G. K. Chesterton
