Jonesboro Florist Provides Real "Service" Flowers

Honoring enlisted personnel and veterans has become a tradition at Posey Peddler that is getting noticed by more and more people in Jonesboro.

Three years ago, Bridgette Mills Arnold and her staff decided to become part of the Veterans' Day Parade. They created a "float" by using their shop's van and handed out flowers as they walked the three-mile parade route. They enjoyed it so much that they decided to do it again the next year.

"What I noticed right off was that there weren't that many retailers involved in the parade," Bridgette said. "That surprised me because everyone has veterans and enlisted personnel as customers."

The next year they entered the parade again and distributed flowers to bystanders. They had a great time and experienced such a good feeling for their participation that Bridgette decided this was going to be a tradition for the shop.

Last year was even more special because the local 375th National Guard Engineering Battalion was going to be deployed to Afghanistan shortly after Veterans' Day. Again, very few retail businesses were in the parade, so the Posey Peddler's delivery van was even more noticeable along the parade route. To honor the veterans and soldiers, Bridgette decided to give every one of them a long-stemmed beauty called "The Freedom Rose."

"We attached a card to each rose with the shop's logo on it and information that The Freedom Rose was a perfect symbol of freedom and the people who fight for it because it is long-lasting, strong, and is a beautiful thing to behold when it is allowed to spread out in full flower," Bridgette explained. "We gave out 400 to 500 roses that day."

She also distributed the roses to dignitaries and special guests during the ceremony at the conclusion of the parade. Tears were spotted in many an eye as Bridgette and her staff presented the flowers to those in uniform.

"It reminded us how special a rose can be to someone," Bridgette said. "Presenting those roses really touched people and it makes us feel that we are honoring people who truly deserve it."
