August - Brighten Summer with Flowers

During the dog days of summer, it’s comforting to know we still have pretty flowers to look at that can survive the August heat. The availability of flowers in the summer can be limited, but there are some August gems that have the ability to both impress and withstand the hot sun.

Poppy – The poppy is the August birth flower. Poppies come in a variety of colors, ranging from white through deep red hues. Its flowers are cup-shaped, with five or more large petals that form the poppy’s distinctive seed capsule. This ornamental plant symbolizes tranquility and makes for a perfect gift to anyone needing a little peace in their lives.

Gladiolus – An astonishing long-stemmed flower that blooms from the bottom to the top, the gladiolus symbolizes generosity, sincerity and infatuation. This fresh summertime flower will make an impressive wedding bouquet or centerpiece. Sometimes referred to as the “corn lily” for its sword shaped leaves, the gladiolus is visually soothing and is excellent for August birthdays. These flowers have a wide range of colors: pink and reddish, light purple with white markings, creamy white or fiery orange and red.

Stargazer Lily – Known for its stunning blooms and heavenly scent is the stargazer lily. This delicate yet bold flower says anything from “congratulations” to “I’m sorry,” and can withstand the severe heat August brings. Conventionally known for representing innocence and purity, the Stargazer has come to be associated with additional meanings. The white Stargazer Lily is often used as an expression of sympathy and can be used to brighten up a dear friend’s day. The pink color variations are considered a symbol of wealth and prosperity and can be representative of a celebratory event. Of the many lilies today, the Stargazer is one of the true stand outs.

Lotus – The lotus can be considered a perfect standalone flower with its striking shape, pink color and exotic fragrance. Its unique nature is to bloom with sunrise and to close and submerge in the evening. As such, it was defined in ancient times as a sun worshipper, making it a suitable August flower. Although the lotus has several meanings, the more general meaning of this peculiar flower is love. Being representative of survival, this flower is a lovely gift of encouragement and congratulations to anyone deserving.
